On Creative Writing Degrees
ghost of redbeard
Maybe it's just me, but every time I read about a Creative Writing degree, I think of creative ways of trying to BS clients/employees/customers/etc. Probably not what the people who are promoting those degrees have in mind, but given that I've seen enough "creative writing" in the jobs I've had in the 20+ years I've been in the work force, I can't NOT think about it.

And does anyone actually enjoy the kind of writing done by these degreed professionals? Probably other people with Creative writing degrees, but i'm not one of them. I'm not knocking it, it's just that making anything that specialized tends to exclude anyone who doesn't have the same specialized training. Not very "creative."

And the whole idea that you can teach someone to be creative--i'm not sure about that. Perhaps you can help remove the obstacles to creativity, but i don't think that's what these degrees are about.

I do have to wonder about how effective that sort of degree is, because all I can think of is "creative writing is similar to creative bookkeeping".

Except it's not criminal!
